STRUCTURED ACAMEMIC SUPPORT

These options are available for students who are on campus waiting for another class, or for students waiting for a sibling to complete their classes.

SAS will be $2/student/period with the exception of being a Teacher's Aide which is a free option.

The purpose of this part of our program is to take advantage of all learning opportunities, and to insure that our students remain on task and supervised while on campus.

If you student has an open class time period between their scheduled classes, they will need to be a part of the SAS program.

All students on campus must have active supervision by an adult.

Not all options listed will be available continuously, but students will have the option to choose an activity daily.  Additional options will be added in the future.

Art

Students will have the ability to complete art projects that will include a variety of mediums for them to explore, such as: drawing fundamentals (contour, gesture, still-life), painting techniques (watercolor, acrylic, oil), 3D art (clay, papier-mâché, cardboard sculpture), self-portraits, and story telling through art.

Teacher's Aid (free)

Each student interested in becoming a teacher's aid (TA) will complete a short course on Early Childhood Education in order to help in the lower grade classrooms.  Some of the opportunities in these classes include: assisting the teacher, reading to students, listening to students read, creating and implementing art projects, engaging in playtime activities, helping with lessons and lesson planning.  Space is limited.

Typing

Students will use this time to learn to type and 10-key by touch.  Limited space is available for this class per day and students will need to sign up.

Piano

Students will be able to work independently with a keyboard and an online tutorial on an IPad to learn the keys of the piano, how to read sheet music, and begin to play simple songs.

Book Club

Students will choose books to read together as a group and then discuss the different aspects of the writing process, themes, and perspectives.

This club is designed to foster independent reading, critical thinking, and meaningful peer conversations in a collaborative, low-pressure environment.

Year Book

This program will focus on different aspects of putting a BBLC yearbook together.  Planning, structure, and layout will be the initial focus, followed by implementation of the actual yearbook.  Some areas of project completion will be: design, writing, photography, graphic layout, and printing.

Reading Workshop

In this workshop, students will have the opportunity to improve their reading skills.  By working with phonics, sight-word recognition, reading out loud, and fluency practice, students will gain confidence in their reading abilities.

Creative Writing

If your student loves to write and create stories, this class is an opportunity for them to build on these interests.  Story and character development will be the focus of instruction.  Each student will be able to develop multiple short-stories, or continuously work on a full book project throughout the school year.
